When I read what Wilson Pickett said, at first I was upset. ‘White people couldn’t play no Soul’ – sounded racist, and that’s not acceptable

I let it sink in that the music was born of Gospel and the Blues and no suppression and injustice couldn’t stop those people move

Soul - Soul is Black. That’s what Wilson Pickett said and he’s right, that’s where it’s at
Soul is black – So let’s bow before the great ones, and they were all black, and that’s a fact

So it’s clear now, at least to me, that if you’re trying to imitate it, you’re missing a whole world there, so you couldn’t ever fake it

Even though there’s one or two who do it neatly, there’s no other way to bend it - Soul is black, it’s true, and you better comprehend it

So all that’s left for me to do is to try and dig the groove and pick out pieces I can make my own, create my very own way to move.

I love that kind of music and though it might be the best there is it’s not the only one for me, so I’ll never claim to be what I could never be
